6U & 8U

Both 6U and 8U hockey groups include female players who are new to hockey. The historical retention rate of female players skating with their friends and classmates in 6U & 8U hockey is very high. Conversely, the attrition rate is very high for girls playing co-ed mites.

HP aims to place players with other skaters of like skill and maturity to accelerate skating, skill, and general hockey development. 6U focuses on skill-enhancing games, races, basic edge work, and other engaging youthful activities, such as sled pulls, tag and the like. At the same time, 8U includes these types of activities, but also begins to prepare kids for the transition to travel hockey at a more competitive level.

6U Season Expectations

6U is for those players that are 6 or under in age. It is also for players who are likely new to hockey or have been playing for 1-2 years and are in the earliest stages of development. 6U players tend to have limited stick skills, and are still coordinating skating and stickhandling

6U will practice 2 times per week on Saturday and Sunday, with an occasional 3rd day added mid-week.

They will mostly practice together, and then be introduced to games, scrimmages and jamborees once they are achieving some proficiency with the basics.

8U Season Expectations

8U is for those players that are 8 or under in age. 8U players tend to be more coordinated and able to stand, get up and skate with limited proficiency, are beginning to have basic stick skills and are coordinating skating and stickhandling together.

8U second-year players, especially those that have played at the 6U level, tend to skate with proficiency, handle a puck, and are working on passing and other edge work abilities.

8U consists of an “intermediate” and “advanced” level to account for a wide range of abilities and experience at this level.

8U teams will practice together 2-3 times per week, and then play games and scrimmages throughout the season with neighboring associations.
